Overview

Introduction

Baku State University (BSU; Azerbaijani: Bakı Dövlət Universiteti) stands as one of the most prestigious and largest educational institutions in Azerbaijan, serving as a cornerstone of higher education in the Caucasus region. Established on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, BSU was the first national university in the country. Located in the capital city of Baku, a cultural, scientific, and political hub, the university reflects Azerbaijan’s rich history and forward-looking aspirations. Since its inception, BSU has played a pivotal role in advancing education and scientific research, producing generations of leaders and scholars who have left significant marks on both local and international stages.

History and Establishment

Baku State University began its academic journey with four primary faculties: History and Philology, Physics and Mathematics, Law, and Medicine, enrolling an initial cohort of 1,094 students. The university’s first rector was Professor Vasily Razumovsky, a distinguished surgeon and former professor at Kazan University. In 1930, BSU faced a major setback when the Soviet government ordered its closure as part of a reorganization of higher education, replacing it with the Supreme Pedagogical Institute. However, the university was reestablished in 1934 and continued to operate through the challenging years of World War II, despite shortages of faculty and the enlistment of many students and professors in the military. By its 40th anniversary in 1959, BSU had solidified its position as a leading educational institution in Azerbaijan.

Academic Structure

Baku State University currently comprises 16 faculties, offering a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, making it one of the most comprehensive universities in the region. These faculties include:

  • Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science: Focuses on technical and mathematical skills, with programs in programming and artificial intelligence.
  • Faculty of Physics: Offers advanced programs in theoretical and applied physics.
  • Faculty of Chemistry: Specializes in research and teaching in organic and inorganic chemistry.
  • Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology: Covers disciplines such as sociology, social work, and clinical psychology.
  • Faculty of Law: Trains lawyers, judges, and legal advisors.
  • Faculty of History: Focuses on local and global historical studies.
  • Faculty of Languages and Literature: Offers programs in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, and other languages, alongside literary studies.
  • Faculty of Economics and Business Administration: Concentrates on economics, accounting, and marketing.

Additionally, BSU provides graduate programs, including master’s and doctoral degrees across various fields, reinforcing its role as a hub for scientific research. Academic programs are taught in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English, making the university an attractive destination for international students.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Baku State University requires passing a competitive entrance examination based on a general or specialized secondary school certificate (Attestat). For international students, proficiency in English is a key requirement if the program is taught in English, with a minimum score of 5.5–6.0 on the IELTS or 60 on the TOEFL. Students without recognized language certificates can enroll in a preparatory program offered by the university, where their proficiency is assessed through an interview with the admissions committee. This flexibility makes BSU accessible to a diverse range of students from various backgrounds.

Facilities and Campus

The main campus of Baku State University is located in the heart of Baku, ensuring easy access via public transportation. The campus features modern academic buildings, well-equipped libraries with digital and print resources, advanced laboratories for science and technology, and lecture halls fitted with state-of-the-art technology.
