Baku Engineering University (BEU), known in Azerbaijani as Bakı Mühəndislik Universiteti, is a prominent public higher education institution in Azerbaijan, established to advance engineering education and prepare highly qualified professionals for the industry. Founded on November 8, 2016, by a presidential decree from the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, BEU operates under the Ministry of Science and Education. The university’s charter was officially approved on February 21, 2017, marking its formal establishment as a public legal entity. Located in Khirdalan, Absheron, a medium-sized city near Baku, BEU operates on a modern campus designed to support its academic and research ambitions.
BEU’s mission is to train engineers at all levels of higher education—bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees—while conducting fundamental and applied scientific research. The university emphasizes both theoretical and practical approaches to education, offering programs in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian to cater to a diverse student body. With an enrollment of approximately 2,000–4,311 students, BEU maintains a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and academic records, with an acceptance rate of around 20%. This selectivity ensures a high standard of academic excellence.
The university is structured into four main faculties: Economic and Administrative Sciences, Engineering, Education, and Architecture and Construction. These faculties offer a wide range of programs, including but not limited to Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology, and Business Administration. BEU also provides MBA programs and PhD programs in fields such as Economic Sciences and Environmental Engineering. The curriculum is designed to align with international standards, and the university participates in the European Credit Transfer System, facilitating student mobility and global recognition of its degrees.
BEU is a leader in international collaboration, actively participating in programs like Erasmus+ through KA1 agreements and KA2 projects (e.g., PROMIG, POWER, NIZAMI, CRENG, MAGNUS). It has also been involved in HORIZON 2020 projects with European partner universities. A notable partnership is the dual degree program with Inha University in South Korea, available for students in Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics Engineering. These international ties enhance BEU’s global reputation and provide students with opportunities for exchange programs and cross-cultural academic experiences.
The university’s campus is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a rich library, laboratories for physics, biology, computer science, automation control, energetics, and architecture, as well as a technopark and innovation center. Dormitory facilities accommodate 300 students and include study rooms, satellite TVs, libraries, cafeterias, tennis courts, high-speed internet, and laundry services. The campus also features conference halls, fitness centers, and outdoor sports facilities, fostering a vibrant student life. Additionally, BEU’s Health Department, established in 2001, provides first aid and medical examinations, ensuring student well-being.
Student engagement is a cornerstone of BEU’s ethos. The university hosts 16 student clubs and 4 social associations, with approximately 1,250 students participating in activities ranging from sports and literature to charity and international student initiatives. Clubs like the Charity Club named after H.Z. Taghiyev organize seminars, panels, and community support programs. BEU’s student media center and radio further enrich campus life, while the King Sejong Institute promotes Korean language and culture. The university’s commitment to extracurricular activities enhances students’ social and leadership skills.
BEU has earned accolades for its quality and innovation. It was the first higher education institution in Azerbaijan to receive the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Certificate. In 2023, BEU received Badges of Excellence in the Global Student Satisfaction Awards for scoring above 4.0 in various categories. The university is ranked #701+ in the QS World University Rankings 2017 and holds the third position among Azerbaijan’s top universities, placing it within the top 5% of global institutions.
Research is a key focus at BEU, conducted through the Baku Engineering University Institute and six research centers. Both faculty and students engage in cutting-edge projects, supported by modern laboratories and grant programs. The university’s technopark fosters innovation and entrepreneurship, bridging academia and industry. BEU’s career-building department assists students with CV preparation, job searches, and career days, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the workforce.
In summary, Baku Engineering University is a dynamic institution that blends rigorous academic training with practical skills and global perspectives. Its modern facilities, international partnerships, and vibrant student life make it a leading choice for aspiring engineers and professionals in Azerbaijan and beyond
