General Overview of Tbilisi State Medical University

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is Georgia's oldest independent medical institution, with roots dating back over a century. Initially founded as part of Tbilisi State University, the medical faculty quickly established its own identity, becoming Tbilisi State Medical Institute in 1930 and ultimately gaining full university status in 1992. This progression reflects the university’s role as a pioneer in medical education reform, clinical training, and internationalization, embracing both local traditions and global standards of practice.

Today, TSMU is home to approximately 7,500 undergraduate students and 3,000 postgraduate students, with nearly 25% of the student body hailing from outside Georgia. The university is ranked among the top medical institutions in Georgia and is recognized by organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER).

TSMU’s academic infrastructure includes multiple faculties, research centers, university-affiliated clinics, and international department initiatives, all fostering a comprehensive learning environment. The medium of instruction for most international programs is English, and the university has adopted modern, outcomes-based curriculums aligned with European and international guidelines.
